Argentinian Fighter Bomber Sinks British Destroyer HMS Sheffield
Dear Fellow Earthlings, On the 4th of May 1982 the British Forces and the Falkland Islanders learned that they too had now lost men in battle. HMS Sheffield, a destroyer , was sunk by an Exocet radar missile fired from an Argentine Etendard fighter bomber. 21 men of a complement of 270 lost their lives, Henceforth, the fleet would have to keep a safe distance from the Falklands so that fuel limitations of the Argentine attack aircraft would reduce the likelihood that follow-up destructive attacks would occur. The Sheffield took 3 days to sink, but it was clearly dead in the water as night fell on May 4, 1982. A flier had also lost his life on May 4th. During a strafing run of Argentine positions near Goose Green, Lieutenant Nicholas Taylor perished when the Harrier he was flying was shot down. Taylor's Harrier was one of four that had gone on the strafing run. The other 3 returned safely to their ship. The residents of the Falkland Islands were now sobered by the fact that the Argentine military could inflict damage to the British Task Force.
