If South Georgia can be liberated, so too can the Falklands!
Dear Fellow Earthlings, On the 25th of April 1982 the 550 or so Port Stanley residents who were still in town (the others having fled out into "Camp", the non-Stanley portions of the Falklands) heard rumors about mid-morning: It seemed that South Georgia had been retaken by British forces. By evening it was clear that the the Argentine forces there in South Georgia had raised white flags in surrender. The official date of surrender would turn out to be on the 26th of April. However, on the 25th of April the world learned that South Georgia was once again in British hands. Clearly the Argentines were worried more than ever about the approaching British Task Force. After all, even the tiny group of ships, helicopters, and personnel that made up the Task group had taken South Georgia back in a single day, putting one of Argentina's 4 submarines out of commission in the process! But at least the Argentines had air superiority -- due to the fact that the only suitable runway for landing military aircraft of all sizes in the Falklands was under their control. In addition, they still had 3 submarines that could menace British surface vessels. However, since this was only half of the number of submarines that the British had in proximity of the Falklands, it was absolutely vital that the Argentines should have mastery of the skies when hostilities in the Falklands themselves began. On this Sunday in April an attempt by the Argentinian government to have Falkland Islanders speak out publicly on behalf of the Argentinian cause -- and to ask the British government to halt the advance of its Task Force -- came to no avail. The Falkland Islanders were resolute in their unanimity, as not even one of them would come forward in support of the Argentines. After all, this was the Islanders' land, there was new hope that the British actually would come to their aid, and none of the Islanders had any respect for the Argentine forces that had entered the Falklands without the permission of the inhabitants of their proud little country!
