The British are Coming!

Dear Fellow Earthlings, On the 7h of April 1982 the strong winds so common in the Falklands (where trees imported from Europe can never grow straight) were working on the side of the Falkland Island people: Argentinian flags soon became rags (many of them falling to earth when their flagpoles snapped), a radar installation set up by the invaders blew over, tents for the beleaguered masses of soldiers proved to be less than unflappable, and navigation woes plagued the many ships coming over from Argentina. Some of the military higher-ups could be seen strutting about the streets of Port Stanley surveying the "prize city" (of fewer than 1800 residents!) they had captured. The sleepy little town was now theirs -- or so they thought.... Meanwhile, far to the north the flotilla of British ships -- complete with two aircraft carriers, quickly assigned to accompany the flotilla -- were sailing towards the Falkland Islands. A task force that included Royal Marines and paratroopers was quickly assembled to add a ground fighting capability to the flotilla. Ascension Island, a British colony located about 7,350 kilometers south of Great Britain and 5,300 kilometers north of the Falklands was quickly set up to serve as a way station for the flotilla. Ascension Island had a large airport and sufficient docking facilities to be utilized for this purpose. The British were on their way!
