Our catch phrase is on its way.
Dear Fellow Earthlings,
A United Nations commission has recently granted Argentina 35% of “additional sea territory”, amounting to some 1.7 million square kilometers of surface area. Within that vast amount of territory sit the Falkland Islands, whose independence is protected by British armed forces.
Note that the committee can make recommendations, but its pronouncements carry no weight, legally. If you are inclined to think that the gains that would be afforded those involved in the land-and-sea grab that continues to obsess the Argentines would lead to great prosperity and happiness for all, then think again!
Many people all over Earth fail to understand that oil and all of the baggage that its exploitation and proposed further exploitation carries with it are literally undermining Earth’s integrity as a habitable planet.
So, the Falklands fixation should be disassembled and its composite parts recycled -- and be used to create something more positive.
Self-determination of the native people of the Falklands can be fostered if:
1. We stop seeking oil as the “solution to pollution”, since its release into the biosphere is in fact a major source of life destroying pollution. 2. We agree to disagree with those who, ostensibly, have something to gain by having the Falklands surrender their land and their lives to the Spanish language wave that has inundated North and South America, percolating even into those crevasses most distantly removed from its myriad of epicenters. 3. We establish the Falklands as a center for learning English in the Southern Hemisphere. Unlike Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa, where English supplanted indigenous languages in many cases, often leading to strife and suffering as a result, the English speakers of the Falklands do not have those sins to deal with. How nice it would be to have the Falklands flag represent the English speaking world in the Southern Hemisphere! 4. We recognize the value of having an unpolluted and sparsely populated (in terms of its numbers of humans) Falklands as a sanctuary for flora and fauna -- and as a repository of “peace and quiet” in an increasingly noisy, polluted world.
Downing Street continues to reaffirm its commitment to the people of the Falklands to back their right to self-determination in the face of the claims made by Argentina.
The Falkland Islands government says it is seeking clarification from London as to the implications for the islands of any ruling by the commission.
Mike Summers, the chairman of the islands' Legislative Assembly has stated that it has “always” been his and his fellow Islanders’ understanding that the U.N. would avoid making any determination on applications for continental shelf extension in areas where there are competing claims.
Somehow, the U.N. people who made this pronouncement feel that it is the limits of the Continental Shelf that determine who should have jurisdiction over the Falkland Islands.
Just as Pope Julius II’s January 1506 pronouncement sanctioned the line of demarcation that arbitrarily says the Falklands are to be Spanish speaking (rather than Portuguese speaking), so too are certain people in positions of power now saying that that line should be used to help provide added support for the notion that the shape of an ocean floor’s underlayer determines ownership of the water and -- presumably -- the sky above it!
Don’t the Argentines realize that might makes right?
Of course they do!
This is why they invaded the much smaller country in 1982, since they thought they could prove themselves right by demonstrating their might! Well, they didn’t have enough might to “make the situation right", did they!
Is England going to have to smack them on their groping hands again? You know, those who prey on the weak have to be kept under control! If you are thinking otherwise, just look around you for a reality check!
Long live the Falklands!
Very truly yours,
