Our catch phrase is on its way.
Dear Fellow Earthlings,
In my yearning to save Earth, great organizers such as New Yorker Louis Bacon, occupy a very special place in my heart. Bacon, a successful hedge fund manager, is using his financial clout, his managerial expertise, and his love for Earth to secure – and then to maintain – pristine places on Earth. In these places, Nature can flourish with either no or with only a carefully controlled modicum of use of them by humans.
In 1993 Bacon bought a 176-hectare island (Robins Island) in the state of New York for 11 million dollars to prevent its development. That island is now a sanctuary for wild birds.
Recently Bacon has donated $440,000 to help the British government create a sea life sanctuary surrounding Ascension Island, a British colony. Through the efforts of Bacon and like minded others, an area of ocean more or less the area of the United Kingdom surrounding Ascension Island is slated for formal designation as a “marine reserve” by next year (2017). A bit over 50% of the reserve will be closed to fishing, with the rest being carefully monitored thanks to a grant from the “Louis Bacon Foundation”.
This action is coming none too soon, as fleets of fishing vessels from many countries are bringing humans and machines which threaten the survival of the huge and varied living things that have their homes either in the waters surrounding Ascension Island or along the tiny rim of shrinking ocean frontage that the island possesses.
A few representative indigenous species of Ascension Island are green turtles, extremely large marlin, Ascension frigate birds, red-billed tropicbirds, sooty terns, and black noddies. Slightly more than half of the reserve will be closed to fishing while the remainder will be policed thanks to a grant from the Louis Bacon Foundation. The reserve should be ready for formal designation by 2017.
By the way, a British Royal Air Force facility RAF Ascension Island, provides a refueling stop for the regular air link between RAF Brize Norton in Oxfordshire England , and RAF Mount Pleasant in my beloved Falkland Islands.
Very truly yours,
