Our catch phrase is on its way.
Dear Fellow Earthlings,
Today I turned 66. Here’s what I was doing 50 years ago today, when I turned 16:
Friday, January 10, 1964
Dear Diary,
Today I turned 16. Dad gave me two dollars for my birthday.
Abuelita Mina sent me a dollar. I have a crush on Judy Adamitis, the cheerleader – and two years older than I am.
She probably notices how I stare at her, but she never betrays any emotion…Probably she doesn’t have any…
At any rate, every day during lunch I sit near the popcorn machine, where Judy works selling popcorn to raise money for our highschool yearbook “The Kahokian”.
As she works I just look at her. She is so efficient and so cute!
My friends Bob Nelson and Bill Boehm are jealous because soon I will be getting my drivers license.
In Illinois you can get your license when you turn 16. Bill will not turn 16 until July – and Bob, not until August. In their jealousy, they taunted me a bit: Bob: Hey, Bill! When I turn 16, I’ll be driving a 1961 car – and so will you! What kind of car will you be driving, Steve?
I replied to their taunt by joking right back: “The main thing is that I will be driving – not depending on others to drive me.” Tonight I went to another Kahoks basketball game.
I watched both the junior varsity game (which we won) and the varsity game (which we also won).
As I watched the varsity game I enjoyed popcorn. Judy was there, cheerleading.
The Kahoks won and are now 13-0. After half-time Bill Boehm came and sat with me.
He and I went to “Dairy Castle” after the game and had hamburgers and malts. Bill’s dad picked us up outside of “Dairy Castle” and drove us home.
TO MY READERS: ON THIS MY 66th BIRTHDAY, I JUST PUT IN A GOOD DAY WORKING.
