Our catch phrase is on its way.
Dear Fellow Earthlings,
50 years ago, President John F. Kennedy was assassinated. That was truly a sad event for many people, including me. Mr. Kennedy was a great President. However in a letter to Basil Williams, President of the Seneca Nation of Indians, delivered to Mr. Williams in August of 1961, President Kennedy had explained why he would not stop the construction of a dam on the Allegheny River that would displace thousands of Seneca people. That construction was in violation of a treaty between the U.S. government and the Seneca Nation. Despite this fact, President Kennedy refused to stop the construction of the dam. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers went ahead and built that dam. The resulting lake flooded not only homes and farms but also sacred Seneca burial grounds. The dam’s construction disrupted the Seneca people’s way of life and led to a loss of hope on the part of many of them, creating a “lost generation” in which the culture and the language of the Seneca people were grievously damaged. Now the Seneca people are engaged in a last ditch effort to preserve their language. I am doing my best to help them in that endeavor. May the hopelessness of the past half century give way to hope for a bright future for the Seneca nation and their language!
