Our catch phrase is on its way.
Dear Fellow Earthlings,
I turned 9 on January 10, 1957. That summer the intense competition between me and my Aunt Thelma Yolanda eased as she and her mother (my maternal grandmother) moved to Massachusetts. In 4th grade my teacher was Mrs. Dorothy Dupree. What a wonderful teacher she was! She was big on developing her students’ talent and character as well as their academics. To that end she would often speak very candidly, saying such things as “You may be quite a smart boy – but unless you can also be nice to people and respect what they do as something equal to what you do, then you will be letting yourself and others down.” Mrs. Dupree encouraged us to think big, pointing out that the Soviet Union had just launched the first manmade Earth satellite and that many Russian children our ages were already studying English and high level math and science. Mrs. Dupree, was a beautiful and articulate woman, steadfast in her resolve to make each and every one of her students be all they could be!
