Dear Fellow Earthlings,

My letter to Elon Musk, which began in Installment 103, concludes in this installment.

Here is how the itinerary from Monmouth, Oregon to Carcass Island in the Falkland Islands would look: Depart Monmouth, Oregon at 8:17 a.m. (with pods arriving every 45 seconds) take a Stage 3 hyperloop to a Stage 2 hyperloop entry point at Corvallis, Oregon (20 miles south of Monmouth), arriving Corvallis at 8:32. 8:36 (with pods arriving every 2 or 3 minutes) depart Corvallis on a Stage 2 hyperloop to Eugene, Oregon. At 8:53 we would arrive in Eugene. Let’s say that at that point we have a leisurely cup of coffee and a sandwich in Eugene! Then, at 9:30 a.m. we take a Stage 3 hyperloop (arriving every 5 minutes) for Stanley, the Falkland Islands, arriving in Stanley at 7:30 p.m.on the same day Monmouth, Oregon time (but at 11:30 p.m. on the same day, Falkland Islands local time, because of a 4-hour time difference between Oregon and the Falkland Islands). Customs and Immigration formalities all taken care of, we next take a stage 2 hyperloop to Carcass Island, the Falklands, arriving at the home of the island owner Rob McGill at 11:50 p.m. We then proceed directly to our rooms, without waking the Rob and Lorraine, who have left the house’s front door -- and the doors to our rooms -- unlocked. (Total door-to-door travel time: 11 hours and 50 minutes; total distance covered -- straight line, allowing for Earth’s curvature -- 9,450 miles. As for the cost: $189 roundtrip fare for Elon -- and the same for Steve NOTE: Since neither the McGiills nor the Falkland Islands government would want any disruptive or damaging influx of people to overwhelm the fragile ecology of Carcass Island, restrictions for entry onto Carcass Island need to be worked out. Also (my personal note), in hopes of letting more than only the rich and powerful see Carcass, a system providing for higher user fees for wealthy visitors to visit Carcass would need to be institituted. Some of the proceeds from those fees could then be used to allow people of lesser means to experience Carcass for substantially lower costs. Yours faithfully, Steve Walker And that’s it, my readers!
