Our catch phrase is on its way.

(This blog was compiled in the Falklands on 26 July 2013 local time.)

Dear Fellow Earthlings,

This morning I met with Simon Fletcher, Director of General Services for the Falkland Islands Government. We were able to talk for a bit more than 30 minutes. Simon spent about 5 years in Japan, and his wife is Japanese. Now that Simon and I have talked, he is aware of what I hope to accomplish here in the Falklands.

For lunch I dropped in at a little diner called “Jacs Cake and Coffee Shop”. This was my second time there. I had a tuna fish sandwich, a small piece of chocolate cake, and a bottle of water.

After lunch I made the climb up onto the heights of Stanley, following Philomel Street –which brings to mind Baldwin Street (“the world’s steepest street”) in Dunedin, New Zealand (which my wife and I walked up last year). Once at the top of Philomel Street (not quite so steep as Baldwin Street, but a bit longer), I turned left and walked along the Stanley By-pass until I reached the structure that houses the Department of Agriculture, where I talked with two farmers Keith Alazia and Paul Phillips. We discussed my wish to visit some farms in order to analyze the dialects of the farmers, their kin, and close acquaintances. Keith said that he would speak to Farmers Association members to see if they can help me out.

After the meeting, I walked all the way back to my hotel, a distance of, perhaps, 2 kilometers. That walk was downhill most of the way – and so took very little effort despite the strong headwind I faced. I just love the woolen cap and scarf that I purchased the other day. They come in handy here!
