Our catch phrase is on its way.
Dear Fellow Earthlings,
I have arrived in the Falklands and am presently staying at a bed-and-breakfast called Lafone House. It being the off-season, there are only two other guests here, one a 27-year-old art student named Nell (who is English but is in a masters degree fine arts program at Boston University) -- and the other a 25-year-old Welsh lady named Ceri (pronounced “ke Riy” as in “carry”), doing medical internship training at the hospital here in Stanley. My first impressions of the Falklands? Actually, pretty much as I had expected: grey skies, strong winds, nighttime temperatures hovering around 0 degrees Celsius. I had expected the air here to be clean – and it is! It is, in fact, absolutely pristine! Due in part to that clean air, I slept very well last night. As I told Monica, who is watching Lafone House while its owner Arlette is away on holiday, “Last night I slept the best I have slept in 31 years”! And then I added: “ – in fact, the best I have slept since the Falklands conflict ended! I just needed to get here to pay my respects! I can finally relax!” The highlight so far: The gentleman who brought my baggage to Lafone House from the airport is Gary, an Englishman and a veteran of the Falklands War. After coming here to the Falklands to fight, he fell in love with the place and moved here. I thanked Gary for his wartime service and added that I was truly honoured to meet him.
