Our catch phrase is on its way.
Dear Fellow Earthlings,
As Earth becomes progressively more crowded with people, the competition for food, water, air, elbow room, and so on increases. The best way to ease the burdens confronting humans as our population (a bit over 7 billion as of June 9, 2013, compared with a population of 1.65 billion only 100 years ago – and a “mere” 0.45 billion 500 years ago) is to limit the number of babies we produce. Such thinking goes contrary to what some people feel: They think that it is our duty to multiply and to fill the Earth.
Well, my fellow Earthlings, we have indeed fulfilled our duty. We have enough people.
Part of the stress, pollution, and shortage of resources we are encountering is caused by our sheer numbers. Let’s look at the island nation of Mauritius (a picture of what the Earth would be like if our population density were to reach 703 people per square kilometer of dry land). It is facing serious overpopulation problems – and even if the dodo (which once lived an idyllic life on Mauritius before the island was discovered by humans) were still extant, there would be no room for any dodos on Mauritius today!
People need to learn how important it is to manage our human population wisely – and then to take measures to do so!
