Our catch phrase is on its way.

Dear Fellow Earthlings,

Globalization and its ramifications is causing not only the extinctions of many flora and

fauna, but also of many languages. As recently as 1900 there were tens of thousands of

distinct languages on Earth. Now that number is down to some 6,000 or so. More and more

people are giving up their native tongues and yielding to the “top 20” languages (the “top

four” of which are Mandarin Chinese, Spanish, English, and Hindustani). Just as the

extinctions of life forms eventually come to pass, so too do the extinctions of languages.

But we should not wantonly expedite (or even cause) extinctions. There is strength in diversity –

but also, there is beauty in it! By making younger people proud of their parents’ languages

and through proper training (especially as regards pronunciation!) there is hope!

And “The Jingles” makes that attainable ! More on “The Jingles” tomorrow!
