Our catch phrase is on its way.
Dear Fellow Earthlings,
Many people have been kind to me over the years. As mentioned in yesterday’s installment, Mohammed Abdu was very considerate and compassionate with me.
Then (when I was in the U.S. Navy, attending radioman school in San Diego, California) there was the master chief petty officer who upon seeing me, a petty officer third class, cutting across a little strip of lawn to go to the enlisted personnel club, scolded me in front of his buddies – only to notice that once I had entered the club, I seated myself in a corner, alone, nursing a tiny mug of beer. He walked up and said, “Hey, sailor, why such a tiny mug?”
I explained that I had sent all of my money back to Illinois to pay on my college loan and that all I had was enough for that tiny mug. His eyes grew wet and he said, “That’s life!” Then he walked away…
Just as I was finishing that tiny mug of beer, the petty officer reappeared – with his buddies -- AND with a huge mug of beer – and a big bowl of popcorn – and two giant hot dogs.
He said, “Hey,sailor! Enjoy!!” Then he and his buddies said, “Sorry about scolding you."
I saluted them, they saluted me, and then they left. I just will never forget how nice they were to me!!
